Set up, adjust and operate conventional and/or special purpose machine tools to perform diversified and difficult operations on work having close and exacting tolerances, several dimensional relationships, unusual contours and finish specifications frequently involving the improvisation of machines and tooling to accomplish results where operations require a broad knowledge of machining technology, operating skills and shop techniques together with long term diversified experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Plan and determine setup procedures and operating sequences; select tooling attachments, spindle speeds, tool feed rates, work piece securing methods, supports, etc., best suited for nature of operations, machine and size of work piece

Position, align and secure work piece on the bed of the machine, clamp and support work securely, using care to avoid distortion that may affect finished dimensions, or secure work piece between centers or on face plates of turning machines

Set tooling in holders and calibrate tool heads to orient tools and work piece to reference point for operations, using care to insure settings to assure travel clearances and avoid tool deflection affecting dimensions and finishes

Calibrate machine during operations for rate and amount of cut to obtain required finish and dimensional specifications; check work to assure dimensional conformance where several related dimensions and unusual contours are required

Grind or prescribe grind for special and standard tooling to compensate for material variations and cutting conditions. Work from complex and involved sectionalized and part drawings and specifications.

Use a wide range of precision measuring instruments and devices to set up, operate machine and check work

Makes repair parts if not commercially available

Plans setup and operates typical machine shop machine tools, producing parts to tolerances and company specifications. Uses typical machinist's hand tools

Sets up and tests equipment under power, testing for mechanical difficulties, tracing to their sources, and correction problems

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Collaborate with engineering personnel to develop concepts, prototypes, and first article parts fabricated to engineering specifications.

Ability to rework parts for advancing engineering needs

Understand material specification for various materials such as stainless steel, tool steel, aluminum, brass, and plastic

Perform milling operations such as drilling, tapping, boring, and conventional milling and lathe work, using various engine lathes

Uses various hand-held and stationary power and non-power tools as well as cutting tools and measuring instruments on a frequent basis

Lift, tighten, adjust and/or secure heavy objects in order to perform work, observe all safety procedures, and use proper protective gear

Keep work area neat and clean

Assist other machinist in department with skilled or non-skilled duties as directed by supervisor

Follow company safety procedures and OSHA lockout-tag out regulations for equipment under power.

Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

Graduate of technical school, full apprenticeship program, or completion of in-company, four-year training program to satisfaction of plant training committee

Five (5) or more years of experience as a fully qualified machinist

Close attention and care is required to prevent damage to complex machine tools or costly metals

Ability to interpret engineered drawings, blueprints, and specifications

Ability to produce precision work

Visual acuity (corrected) to read directions and prints and to inspect machined parts closely to ensure that they meet specifications.

Manual dexterity sufficient to operate machinery for precision work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk, and/or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 - 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work in machine shop environment

May occasionally be required to perform job duties outside the typical shop setting.
